Roman Catholics have their system of degrees of sin. They have mortal sins that are expiated in hell and venial that can be purged in purgatory. They have an elaborate system of penances, confession, and indulgences to deal with a host of different sins. Civil governments have their own system of degrees of sin, from misdemeanors, to felonies, to capital crimes. Protestants have correctly maintained that in one sense there are no degrees of sin. They have properly taught that all sin is mortal and will be expiated for a future eternity in the lake of fire unless it is atoned for by the blood of Christ. However, true as that is, the Scriptures still teach that in God’s sight there are definitely degrees of sin.
